Two weeks ago in a company earnings reports publisher Acclaim Entertainment revealed that it was
working on a game called
Urban Freestyle Soccer for next-generation consoles. No details were given on the product at that time.
Today, though, Acclaim dished out more goods on the sport outing. According to an
official release,
the title is a four-on-four extreme soccer affair that travels players
"back to the streets" in a gritty take on the pastime. The game centers
on rival gangs which play street soccer to gain respect in urban
environments. Why does this remind us of the movie
Grease?
Apparently jumpers and oil drums substitute as soccer goalposts and
fast-paced, intense gameplay mingles with a relaxed-rules style that,
among others, no longer credits offsides.
"Urban Freestyle Soccer will offer a great
alternative
to the traditional [soccer] game and will appeal to a much wider
audience," said Ned Browning, brand manager, Acclaim International.
"There has never been a [soccer] game which takes the best from park
soccer and combines it with the raw energy and skill which is seen every
day on the streets around the world. Urban Freestyle Soccer will deliver the ultimate arcade [soccer] experience ever - with innovation which will revitalize the genre."
Urban Freestyle Soccer features
five gameplay modes including Turf Wars, Home Turf and Street Challenge
Cup and a playable variety of more than 16 teams from around the globe.
The title also boasts mini-games, an advanced play combo system and
more. Utilizing what Acclaim calls an intuitive control scheme, players
can perform showboat tricks, flicks and volleys, back-heels, juggling,
scissor kicks and more.
Developer Silicon Dreams is readying
Urban Freestyle Soccer for release on GameCube, PlayStation 2,
Xbox and PC later this year.
